Control Points In openFrameworks

I wrote some basic datastructures that I have written (wrong) approximately four times now. They are fully in opengl, and can be moved with the mouse rather than specifying x,y points. The code for this can be found here: github link

So here's an example of them in action - before (as generated in a fully connected node graph), during debug mode, with control points activated, and after debug mode is shut off.

I worked on this blog today.

I made the badge. I also made it so I can edit things a little easier, more clearly, and with click-to-edit functionality. Also, the RSS feed works now! Subscribe! Do it!

I love click to edit stuff, I feel like the whole internet should work that way.

Here's something unexpected - I open sourced it and threw it on Github.

I'm going to be working in the days to come on documentation for how to get it up and running on your site - but here's maybe the best thing about it - it's completely free (as in free beer) to run the thing on your domain - so long as you pay for a domain. More to come as I flesh out the documentation, I promise.

So I made the posts editable with the glorious click-to-edit ease that I love so well lately - this post will likely be edited by it before the end of the day.

Just wanted to plunk down something first.

But these tacos are great.

This is the map involved in getting them: The studio is point A, and Tacos are point B.

Tiny Eyebeam

So this is the related post to the "GIANT I-Beam" joke earlier in the blog.

Alberto Tafoya and I have been making a small arts organization. And I of course, mean that *very* literally. It's only about 100 square inches. We had it 3d printed after meticulously going over the floor plans, the structural plans, and pictures and measurements that we took ourselves.

Here are some actual pictures of the institution.

But it's *more* than just a small joke. It's about sustainability, the current economy, and the importance of risk taking - however small the risks.

We've written more about it at the "main page":http://www.tinyeyebeam.org/ , and it would be swell if you could see to sponsoring a residency.
They are only $50, they last a few days, and an artist has a couple of days to make something wonderful.

Also, if you're an artist who'd like to apply, we've got about 5 more days as of this posting for you to DM "@tinyeyebeam":http://twitter.com/tinyeyebeam with your project submission. The submissions have to be kept to 140 characters, because who do you think you are that you'll accomplish more than 140 characters of a project in 2 days time?

so it's sideways, and I look tired (I spent 10 hours on it on a saturday, so sue me), but it works.

I think it has to do with starting the orientation of the video in a certain orientation, and then it stays in that orientation.

The reason this post is up, is because it's the first working iPhone based video-blog post into my blogging engine.

The fact that I'm using flickr to do video embed means that I'll need to "release" the videos once they're up, which means log into Flickr, copy the embed code, log into blogging engine, paste it there, but still - this situation is a pretty simple iPhone video -> blog solution (I think).

A Diary

I find I keep a diary habitually only when I'm alone.

And I of course mean not just the physical alone but the kind of alone that happens when one of the long term girlfriends that I tend to keep around myself realizes how self involved I am, and dumps me.

*SO* Avi has dumped me and I'm left with my thoughts, and finally a custom me-made blogging service with which to distribute them. Awesome.

I don't even know if I'll hit publish, but if you're reading this, I clearly have.

I found out I had obsessive compulsive disorder when I listened to, on-tape, David Sedaris' _Barrel Fever_ . This was a revelation because it meant that the internal monologue I had - the unceasing nagging feeling in my head that would prevent me from doing something new with new people, or would make me check 20 times if I had turned off the stove, even though I knew damn well it was off - wasn't normal.

This was news.

Other people don't have this, apparently. I've since done some therapy, and figured out how to control it, but in times of stress, it peeks out, and in general, it makes me a more productive and prolific person. If you can't finish working till something's done because your brain won't let you, it's not a hell of a lot different an outcome than actually just being a really driven person.

I told myself that I'd be better, to Avi, when I got out of school - but I wasn't *THAT* much better - I was waiting for the kick to my ass to make me switch gears. And now that I'm ready to switch gears, and my ass has been kicked, it seems like it's too late.

I don't blame her at all.

Time, and it's value.

It's a common occurrence for people to be on the floor at 721 Broadway, 4th Floor, for about 3 months after they graduate. And their reasons are all different.

Some are waiting on jobs to get back to them.

Some are having meetings, working freelance, and doing it here because it's in manhattan and manhattan office space is *fucking* expensive.

Some of us have spent 15 phone calls with Verizon to get a decent internet connection into their studio in Bushwick that they prefer to work out of. And they're coming on monday. They _swear_.

Whatever the reason, there's a crop of people who are just *around*, and shooting the shit. They assume that because they aren't busy, you aren't busy.

The Seven Observed Uses Of Twitter

So I've had some thoughts. And I guess this is why people have blogs.

The way I use Twitter is incredibly nontraditional - apparently. When you give me a 140 character venue for saying stuff, I think because of it's size, it needs to be more carefully considered.

This is likely because of my short-film background, and the fact that I like short stories, and my generally short attention span. But I still believe that less can be much much more.

When you take away space you need to fill, you impress your audience so much more by filling that tiny space with as much as it can hold. And I don't mean all 140 characters. I mean incredibly carefully chosen, labored over 140 characters. Even if they comprise a dick joke.

I'm now going to list my observed uses of twitter that aren't how I use it. I don't understand these uses, and don't subscribe to them. Anyone who I follow who uses it this way, is likely a friend in real life, and I continue following them because I like them as people, and I don't want to lose touch with them.

h2. The List

*1* I don't like reading or looking up things so I'm going to treat you guys like my assistants. Get back to me when it's done.

This is commonly called "_lazyweb_ " but I like to call it "_being an asshole_". You'd be a better and more well rounded person if you at least typed the fucking thing into Google and bothered to read one of the many results you get back.

*2* I stapled this to foursquare and now you know where I am all the time isn't that awesome - it's like I'm saying important things.

In the same way that I think what is written needs to be carefully considered, I also am more generous than I should be with my time and consideration of other people's tweets. And if you're just putting a firehose of "I'm here and here's a clever thing I'm saying as I check in." in my face, as I sit down, and take a breath, and read what you've "written" I'm not thrilled.

*3* Here's some link I found. "http://bit.ly/idontcareaboutyourtime":http://bit.ly/idontcareaboutyourtime

Great, you found something interesting. That's awesome. Either tell me why it's significant to you, or give me SOMETHING for crying out loud. I find things too. Lots of them.

*4* I'm going to pimp this thing I'm working on or tell you how this thing I'm pimping is close to what I'm working on.

David Cross said it best, and I'm quoting loosely, but "Everytime you namedrop, it's like a turd falling out of your mouth, and into my drink."

_corollary_: If you are announcing something you made, once, and are finished with, or proud of - I don't find it so offensive, so long as it's given generously.

*5* RT @someoneelse Some thing someone else said.

I don't mind this use even a little.
_corollary_ : unless it's a retweet of one of the previous 4.

*6* @otherguy let's have a public conversation about stuff

I like this one too. Unless it's about number 7.

*7* TRENDING TOPIC IN CAPS
Hadn't noticed this one till recently. I think you could guess how I feel about it, but if we're making a list of things I have opinions on in Twitter, the list shouldn't be without this: I'm against it and it confuses me.

h2. References?

I'd be remiss if I didn't say that I had this "article":http://www.kungfugrippe.com/post/48588149/better by the fantastic "Merlin Mann":http://www.merlinmann.com/ on the brain during my thought process on this - and in general, it was incredibly influential in the way I use Twitter and social media.

If you build creative stuff on the internet instead of dance, he is, or should be your "Twyla Tharp":http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Habit-Learn-Use-Life/dp/0743235274/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253209297&sr=8-1 . You could actually do worse though, than making Twyla Tharp your Twyla Tharp, even if you're not a dancer.

Why you can't have a pet octopus.

I discussed this with myself for the better part of 4 hours yesterday.

They're as smart as dogs.

The urban myth of the octopus tank that you don't keep sealed, and then the octopus gets out, gets into the fish tank, eats the fish, goes back to the octopus tank?

It's true.

They are smart as all hell.
